The sound and visual identity of Crazy Town embodied the restless contrasts of Los Angeles, where the neglected blocks of South Central lie minutes from the polished excess of Beverly Hills. Fronted by producers and vocalists Seth "Shifty Shellshock" Binzer and Bret "Epic" Mazur, the group merged hip-hop's verbal bite and rhythmic swagger with the drive of live rock instrumentation. That blend produced a number one single in 2001 when "Butterfly" topped the Billboard 100 and lifted the band's first album, The Gift of Game, to platinum certification. Though later efforts never matched that early momentum, Crazy Town issued additional albums in 2002 and 2015 plus an EP in 2024.

Both Bret Mazur and Seth Binzer grew up amid music in Southern California. Mazur's father managed Billy Joel, while Binzer's father worked as an artist and filmmaker who helmed the Rolling Stones' concert film Ladies & Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones. The pair instead gravitated toward rap acts such as N.W.A., Cypress Hill, and Ice-T as well as alternative rock groups like the Cure. Mazur, originally from New York, began making beats and tracks early and contributed to releases by MC Serch of 3rd Bass, Eazy-E, and MC Lyte while also serving briefly as House of Pain's DJ. Binzer discovered the Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill while in Mexico, an encounter that prompted him to start recording his own demos.

The duo first recorded together as Brimstone Sluggers, yet outside commitments to other hip-hop projects kept them from finishing a full album. Time spent in rehabilitation clinics led to an exchange of letters that outlined Crazy Town, a hip-hop band built around a complete live instrumental section supporting the rappers. Their approach drew from classic rap-rock hybrids such as Run-D.M.C.'s "Rock Box" and the collaborative track "Bring Tha Noize" between Public Enemy and Anthrax.

The lineup expanded with Doug "Faydoedeelay" Miller on bass, guitarists Rust Epique and Anthony "Trouble" Valli, DJ AM on turntables, and drummer James "JBJ" Bradley, a session player who had appeared on the Beastie Boys' Check Your Head. This completed the formation of Crazy Town. Close friend Josh Abraham produced the debut album The Gift of Game, which included contributions from KRS-One, dancehall toastmaster Mad Lion, and Dirty Unit. The worldwide success of "Butterfly," an ode to attractive women, launched the band. After Howard Benson produced the 2002 follow-up Darkhorse without comparable impact, the group disbanded in 2003.

Members pursued solo and production work through the decade, though Binzer's repeated struggles with addiction and the 2009 death of DJ AM repeatedly blocked lasting reunions. In 2013 Mazur and Binzer announced in an interview that they had returned to the studio. The resulting project, issued under their earlier name Brimstone Sluggers, appeared in summer 2015. Sporadic touring followed, with band tensions frequently appearing in headlines into the 2020s. The March 2024 EP Flirting With Disaster marked the final release to feature Binzer. On June 24 Seth "Shifty Shellshock" Binzer died at the age of 49.
