Biography
Drawing from sources as varied as "Helter Skelter," Television, and the Strokes, Dan Luke and the Raid craft buzzy indie rock that both nods to and transcends the eras of rock and punk before them. Their first full-length, Out of the Blue, surfaced in 2019.
Frontman and primary songwriter Daniel Luke Shultz heads the group; he is the younger brother of Cage the Elephant’s Brad Shultz and Matt Shultz. More than a decade his brothers’ junior, Daniel was ten when Brad and Matt left the family home outside Bowling Green, Kentucky, for their first overseas tour. With older sibling Jeremy likewise gone, Daniel passed countless hours practicing guitar, often matching notes to the jingles airing on television. While still in high school he joined forces with drummer Kendrick Don-Reid Brent; the pair later assembled Dan Luke and the Raid alongside guitarist Patrick Stewart plus multi-instrumentalists Dylan T. Graves and J. Anthony Joiner. The band released its debut single, “Black Cat Heavy Metal,” in mid-2017 and soon toured in support of Declan McKenna.
After Stewart departed, leaving the lineup a quartet, the group made its Bonnaroo debut in June 2018 and tracked its debut album later that year in Nashville under Brad Shultz’s production. A second festival bow arrived at the 2019 South by Southwest event, mere weeks before Graves died in a workplace accident. The surviving members chose to continue, staging a tribute performance in Bowling Green for their late bandmate. Out of the Blue then appeared on New West Records in October 2019.
