Dead Confederate craft their music through a post-grunge lens while drawing substantial inspiration from psychedelic and Southern rock traditions. The late 1990s saw Hardy Morris (vocals, guitar), Brantley Senn (bass), Walker Howle (guitar), John Watkins (keyboards), and Jason Scarboro (drums) forge initial ties through a common passion for Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath, setting the stage for the group’s eventual formation. Although the quintet originated in Augusta, GA, its members moved to Atlanta once college ended. A prompt second relocation took them to Athens, where expanded touring schedules attracted the interest of former Capitol Records president Gary Gersh. Captivated by the band’s haunting sound, Gersh placed Dead Confederate on his fresh imprint, The Artists Organization, and put out their debut EP in early 2008. The full-length album Wrecking Ball arrived that September, after which the group reemerged two years later with its second record, Sugar. An EP titled Peyote People surfaced in 2012, and early 2013 brought the third full-length release, In the Marrow.
