Demun Jones, a native of Jones County, Georgia, first gained widespread notice when he stepped in as the new songwriter and vocalist for Brooks Buford inside the pioneering country-and-Southern-rap duo Rehab. Raised in that same county just north of Macon, Jones soaked up country, Southern rock, Marvin Gaye, and Motown during his early years, yet a chance encounter with N.W.A. and rap at age ten ultimately steered his artistic path. After Buford’s departure, founding member Danny Boone retained the Rehab moniker and recruited Jones for a re-formed lineup—by then expanded to a five-piece—where Jones remained for the following decade, writing and singing on both Graffiti the World in 2005 and Welcome Home in 2010. His debut solo project, the country-and-hip-hop album Jones Country, appeared on Colt Ford’s Average Joe imprint in summer 2014 and documented everyday existence in his home state. Two years later he issued the follow-up #Beast, which brought together an array of Southern-rap guests such as the Lacs, Colt Ford, Big Smo, and Jelly Roll; an expanded edition containing eight remixed bonus tracks surfaced in early 2017. Jones then released the full-length Jones in Ya Speaker in 2018 along with the collaborative effort The Oven alongside Upchurch, before returning to solo work with 2019’s Demun, which included appearances by Long Cut, Struggle Jennings, and JJ & Sissy.
