Originating from a modest Southern community, the rapper Yelawolf attained major-label recognition upon issuing Radioactive in 2011. Affiliated with Eminem’s Shady imprint, this Alabama native infused his intricate rhyme schemes and verses—shaped by themes of rural hardship and Southern Gothic motifs—with a pronounced regional character. Upon parting ways with Shady in 2019 after delivering Trunk Muzik III as his fifth studio album, he embarked on an intensive series of joint projects. These encompassed independent solo releases such as Mud Mouth in 2021, rap-oriented collaborations with Riff Raff, Caskey, and DJ Muggs, and the country-rock-leaning Sometimes Y, created with Shooter Jennings in 2022.

Born Michael Wayne Atha in Gadsden, Alabama, Yelawolf entered the full-length arena through the independent Creekwater album in 2005. He then moved to Sony BMG, where the promotional single “Kickin’” appeared in 2007. Disheartened by major-label conditions, he retreated to the independent rap circuit. Revitalized, he cultivated listeners through MySpace and mixtape releases. An early indication of his emerging ties to Eminem’s Shady circle surfaced with his 2010 guest spot on Bizarre’s Friday Night at St Andrews. The official signing was confirmed in 2011, and Radioactive, his first release under the label, arrived before year’s end. Eminem, Kid Rock, Lil Jon, and Gangsta Boo contributed guest verses, while Diplo, Jim Jonsin, and the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League supplied production.

The following year he joined blink-182 drummer Travis Barker for the rap-rock EP Psycho White. A 2013 tour alongside Hopsin signaled the approach of Love Story, yet Shady’s 15th-anniversary activities and Yelawolf’s outings with DJ Paul postponed its arrival until 2015. Eminem handled portions of the production and appeared on “Best Friend.” After the album’s release, Yelawolf issued a string of singles while maintaining an active touring schedule. Reuniting with Travis Barker, he first offered “Out of Control,” then followed with “Daylight,” “Shadows,” and “Row Your Boat.” In 2017 the single “Punk,” featuring Barker and Juicy J, surfaced and later appeared on his third major-label album, Trial by Fire, issued late that year. Joshua Hedley, Kid Rock, Lee Brice, Bones Owens, and Wynonna Judd also contributed.

After extended anticipation, Yelawolf confirmed that Trunk Muzik III—a continuation of his earlier Trunk Muzik mixtapes—would constitute his fifth proper album and final project for Shady Records. Machine Gun Kelly, Rittz, and additional guests joined the effort, which reached listeners in March 2019. Later that year he released his sixth studio album, Ghetto Cowboy, through his own Slumerican imprint. During 2021 he maintained an accelerated pace, unveiling five distinct projects between February and April. The sequence opened with the collaborative mixtape Yelawolf Blacksheep alongside Caskey, proceeded through Turquoise Tornado with Riff Raff, the Slumafia EP with DJ Paul, the Mile Zero mixtape with DJ Muggs, and concluded with the seventh studio album Mud Mouth. In 2022 the collaborative streak persisted with Sometimes Y, a country-rock album recorded with Shooter Jennings.
