Brandon Perry, hailing from Maryland, burst onto the scene in 2014 with a rapid chopper flow that showcased his relentless output, dropping over twenty full-length projects plus numerous EPs during his initial ten years. The acronym K.A.A.N. reflects his pledge to address inquisitive, sharp-eared audiences who seek substance beyond typical commercial rap, with recurring subjects spanning mental health struggles, addiction, political issues, and faith. His early cut “Kaancepts” established lofty standards for lyrical depth, rapid pacing, and seamless rhythmic pivots. By the time The High Before You Fall arrived in 2022, Perry had softened his approach yet retained precise cadence and incisive, sometimes biting wordplay.

Born in Howard County in 1991 and raised inside a nearby trailer park, he absorbed foundational influences from 2Pac, Big K.R.I.T., and Mac Miller through his parents; by age ten he possessed every 2Pac release. After graduating Howard High School, he began writing and rapping in his early twenties following a Logic performance in Baltimore. His debut studio session occurred at that city’s Manta Ray Records, yielding material later revised and retitled “Monk from Xiaolin” for the 2014 mixtape Losing My Religion. To finance further work he took employment as a brick mason, supporting releases such as the late-2015 EP 1/12/199? and the Abstract Art mixtape. Recognition arrived gradually, evidenced by “Concealed the Outro,” the opening track from Abstract Art, which eventually amassed twenty million streams by 2022.

Following the Orbt-produced Eclectic Audio EP in early 2016, Perry aligned mid-year with New Jersey’s Redefinition Records for Uncommon Knowledge alongside K-DEF. A burst of activity late in the year produced two independent singles and a pair of EPs, one helmed by Genshin and the other by Sgull. Throughout 2017 his output surged with six EPs, two albums, and five standalone singles, while he initiated enduring partnerships with Bleverly Hills, Berlin’s Klaus Layer, and the Grammy-winning Dem Jointz. Recording sessions with the latter occurred at Dr. Dre’s Record One facility in Los Angeles, shaping the luxurious textures of December’s The Black Blood LP and prompting Perry’s relocation to the West Coast. That album inaugurated a series of projects on Dem Jointz’s U Made Us What We Are label, including the 2018 EP Heart Shaped Melody and the R&B-tinged Pure Intentions, alongside Paradise / / Lost, 4/29/17, and Subtle Meditation.

Issued in March 2019, the three-way Gathering collaboration with Bleverly Hills and Dem Jointz preceded two further U Made Us What We Are albums, July’s I.C.a.B.S. and December’s Naiveté. Rappy Tracks assembled the Nameless mixtape, while Redefinition Records released the solo effort Requiem for a Dream Deferred. Four long-players arrived in 2020—Twenty Nine, Blissful Awareness, All Praise Is Due (crafted by Big Ghost Ltd), and Vivid Canvas—marking the debut of Perry’s own K.A.A.N. Life Music imprint, which later issued Long Time No See in early 2021. Ukrainian producer Smuff tha Quiz contributed to both Kaizen and Kaizen, Pt. 2, issued months apart and nodding to ’90s hip-hop, before Perry closed 2021 with the concise Sunset Crest Dr. Mission Hillz surfaced in early 2022, succeeded by the stoner-rap-leaning The High Before You Fall. The following year opened with joint singles featuring Klaus Layer and Indiana’s Mark Battles.
