Biography
A polarizing provocateur operating out of Los Angeles, rapper Tom MacDonald built a massive audience through lyrics steeped in political confrontation and an unfiltered persona. He first surfaced in the early 2010s as an online video personality before gaining wider notice midway through the decade, when deliberately provocative cuts such as "Dear Rappers," "Whiteboy," and "No Lives Matter" drew both a loyal following and sharp backlash. Operating without label support, he issued the late-2010s projects Deathreats and Ghostories on his own, each new drop stirring fresh debate and attention. By the start of the 2020s he had notched three entries on the U.S. singles chart, while The Brave, his joint effort with Adam Calhoun, marked his initial appearance on both the U.S. and Canadian album charts; Renegade and The Revolution followed in 2022. The pair reconvened for The Brave II in 2023, and the next year MacDonald joined political commentator Ben Shapiro on the track "Facts."
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, MacDonald began his entertainment career as a professional wrestler in Canada before turning to rap at the end of the 2000s, citing 2Pac and Marilyn Manson among his influences. His first full-length effort, LeeAnn's Son, appeared in 2014 and was followed by additional mixtapes and releases. At that stage his sound leaned on trap-tinged beats paired with conventional themes of partying, sex, and drugs. By the late 2010s, however, he pivoted sharply, cultivating an image that resonated with listeners drawn to his politically incorrect stance and self-styled underdog position. He launched direct attacks on fellow rappers and the industry in tracks such as "Dear Rappers," "Exposure," and "Sad Rappers," while also targeting broader society in "Everybody Hates Me" and modern culture in "Politically Incorrect." On the 2019 single "Straight White Male" he delivered the lines "I'm not a racist/I like Hispanics and Negroes and Natives and Asians," generating both massive streams and widespread controversy. With that audience secured, he released "If I Was Black," a hypothetical exploration of how his life might differ had he not been born white.
As the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, MacDonald dropped the somber "Coronavirus," which examined alleged government and media conspiracies and became another fan favorite. Songs such as "People So Stupid" and "Fake Woke" also accumulated millions of streams. The latter joined "Snowflakes" and "Brainwashed" as his first Billboard Hot 100 appearances, all landing in 2021. The following year he partnered with American country-rapper Adam Calhoun on The Brave, his debut release to register on the U.S. and Canadian album charts. Two further albums, Renegade and The Revolution, arrived in November 2022; the former yielded "Sheeple," which peaked at 33 on Billboard's Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, and "Fighter," which reached 14 on the Hot Digital Songs chart. In 2023 MacDonald teamed with John Rich for "End of the World" and reunited with Calhoun for The Brave II, which landed at 62 on the Billboard 200. He opened 2024 with the Ben Shapiro collaboration "Facts," then continued releasing singles including "God Mode" and "You Missed" throughout the year.
