Fusing Southern rap with Southern rock, the Lacs—an acronym for Loud Ass Crackers—developed their signature style of hip-hop, which they playfully labeled "hick-hop." The Baxley, Georgia duo of rapper Clay "Uncle Snap" Sharpe and singer/guitarist Brian "Rooster" King blend equal measures of Bubba Sparxxx and ZZ Top, pairing slinky Southern guitar riffs with booming beats and rhymes drawn from life in the dirtiest corners of the Dirty South.

The Lacs issued their first recordings in the early 2000s via the independent albums Midas Well Get Drunk and South on Fire. Their third effort, Lacology, arrived in 2006, after which they joined Colt Ford’s Backroad label and delivered Country Boy's Paradise in 2011; that set featured Ford and carried the single "Kickin' Up Mud." The following year brought 190 Proof, which enlisted like-minded guests Big & Rich and Bubba Sparxxx and became the group’s first release to reach the overall album charts. Keep It Redneck surfaced in 2013 and again made space for Ford, JJ Lawhorn, Noah Gordon, and Sarah Ross. In 2015 the pair unveiled their eighth album, Outlaw in Me, which rose to number three on both the country and rap album charts, while 2016 yielded the split LP Welcome to Dodge City with Hard Target. Staying true to their established approach, the popular duo issued their sixth LP, American Rebelution, in early 2017, followed by the single "Redneck Rockstar" the next year. Dirt Rock landed in May 2018 and reached the Top 25 of the Billboard Country Albums chart. They returned a year later with Rise and Shine.

A 2020 compilation of highlights titled Kickin' Up Mud appeared alongside Nothing in Particular II, a revisit of their 2014 release. A deluxe edition of Keep It Redneck came out in 2021. All this reflection prompted the Lacs to refocus on fresh material, resulting in 2024’s Story of a Trainwreck.
