Biography
Disillusion emerged as a German progressive metal outfit whose origins lay in thrash-oriented aggression before the group gradually shifted toward an experimental, forward-looking strain of melodic death metal. The ensemble continued refining its approach across irregularly issued full-lengths while folding in an eclectic range of sonic elements such as ambient folk, buoyant electronics, and crushing metallic force, all of which surfaced on the 2022 release Ayam.
The Leipzig-based act first assembled in 1994 and initially concentrated on conventional death and thrash metal, circulating multiple demos through the remainder of the decade. By 1998 the members had parted ways after failing to secure label support for any of their material, yet vocalist and guitarist Vurtox, whose given name is Andy Schmidt, kept collaborating with drummer Alex Motz. Their reunion led to the 2001 EP Three Neuron Kings, which also included guitarist Rajk Barthel and showcased a decisive turn toward progressive songwriting. The trio of Vurtox, Barthel, and newly recruited drummer Jens Maluschka then pursued still greater freedoms on the band’s debut album, Back to Times of Splendor, issued by Metal Blade in 2004. Two years later the follow-up Gloria incorporated electronic, ambient, classical, and alternative rock components, rendering the music resistant to easy categorization. Line-up shifts and stretches of inactivity marked the 2010s and subsequent years, yet the group returned with its third album, The Liberation, in 2017 and delivered a fourth, Ayam, in 2022.
