Sylosis, the metal band from Reading in Berkshire, fuse an array of heavy metal subgenres while maintaining strong emphasis on melody and large-scale song architecture. The group surfaced in the mid-2000s; their first full-length album, Conclusion of an Age, arrived in 2008 and drew directly from classic Bay Area thrash. Progressive and melodic death metal components moved into greater prominence with the 2012 concept album Monolith, and the same stylistic direction shaped later releases such as Dormant Heart in 2015 and A Sign of Things to Come in 2023.

Josh Middleton on lead guitar and Carl Parnell on bass formed the band in 2000, initially bringing in school friends Glen Chamberlain on vocals, Gurneet Ahluwalia on rhythm guitar, and Jay Colios-Terry on drums. Multiple lineup adjustments occurred ahead of their debut EP, Casting Shadows, issued in 2006 on independent label In the Deep Records with Ben Hollyer handling vocals. A follow-up EP, The Supreme Oppressor, appeared in 2007. Jamie Graham took over vocal duties around the time the band signed with Nuclear Blast. With major-label support in place, they prepared Conclusion of an Age for release in 2008; immediately afterward they added former Viatrophy guitarist Alex Bailey on rhythm guitar. In 2009 they completed an extensive European tour with the Black Dahlia Murder, Cephalic Carnage, and Psycroptic, during which Middleton assumed vocal responsibilities. A period of relative stability followed, marked by two further albums—Edge of the Earth in 2011 and Monolith in 2012—and a 2013 European tour supporting Killswitch Engage.

Near the end of that tour the band suffered a serious RV accident that injured every member, forcing canceled dates and an extended recovery. They resurfaced in 2015 with Ali Richardson on drums, who performed on the fourth album Dormant Heart later that year. After Middleton’s close friend Tom Searle died in 2016, Middleton joined Architects as lead guitarist in his memory. Sylosis paused activity to allow a full year of touring with Architects. Middleton chose to remain with Architects on an ongoing basis yet made clear that Sylosis had not ended. Following several quiet years he kept his word, as Sylosis returned in 2019 to begin work on a fifth album, now without Parnell, who had been replaced by Conor Marshall. The uncompromising Cycle of Suffering, which revisited the band’s thrash and metalcore foundations, came out in early 2020. Three years later they issued their sixth long-player, A Sign of Things to Come. Co-produced by Scott Atkins, the record delivered a strong sequence of epic and introspective tracks that balanced extreme sonic weight with technical skill.
