Emerging from the underground death metal scene that flourished in the early '90s, Disincarnate took shape under the direction of James Murphy, widely recognized as one of the style’s foremost guitarists. His six-string contributions had previously extended to outfits including Death, Obituary, Testament, Konkhra, and Cancer. The group’s roster also featured Bryan Cegon handling vocals, Jason Carman on rhythm guitar, and Tommy Viator behind the drum kit, while Murphy himself covered bass duties. During its lifespan the band released just a single full-length effort, the 1993 Roadrunner Records album Dreams of the Carrion Kind. Although its lyrics and thematic content followed the typical grisly death-metal template—evident in tracks such as “Beyond the Flesh,” “Soul Erosion,” and “Deadspawn”—certain passages of the music ventured into prog-metal territory.
