Biography
Dropping Daylight emerged as part of the post-emo wave within American indie rock, where their material emphasizes soaring choruses paired with sharp, heavily distorted guitar lines. At the same time the Minneapolis quartet, which took shape in the early 2000s, channels the sensibility of roughly a decade earlier through frontman Sebastian Davin’s incisive songwriting, his propulsive piano patterns, and a polished vocal delivery rooted in 1970s AM radio pop. These qualities align the band with one-time alternative favorites including Ben Folds Five, the Eels, the New Radicals, and Fastball. The four musicians first assembled in Minneapolis in 2001 under the name Sui Generis, with Sebastian Davin joined by his brother Seth Davin on guitar, bassist Rob Burke, and drummer Jake Englund. They soon adopted the new name Sue Generis and released the album Back to Nowhere in the fall of 2003. Steady touring, capped by a well-received set at the 2004 South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, created enough interest for the group to sign with Octone Records, Sony/BMG’s indie rock label. After settling on the name Dropping Daylight they joined the Vans Warped Tour and supported several rising pop-punk and emo acts. Their first release under the revised moniker, the EP Take a Photograph, appeared in summer 2005; shortly afterward Jake Englund exited and Allen Maier took over on drums. The band’s debut full-length album, Brace Yourself, followed in spring 2006.
