Biography
A composer of Spanish origin, Fernando Velázquez has gained recognition primarily through his symphonic contributions to cinema and TV productions, most notably via repeated partnerships with Juan Antonio Bayona. Getxo, Spain, marks his birthplace, where cello served as his principal instrument during studies at conservatories located in Bilbao and Vitoria, followed by composition training undertaken in Paris and Madrid.
His initial collaboration with Bayona occurred at the outset of their respective professional paths, specifically on the short film El Hombre Esponja from 2002. Additional joint efforts ensued, encompassing The Orphanage in 2007 and The Impossible released in 2012. Spanish television also provided opportunities, with scores for Gominolas in 2007 and Cuéntame un Cuento in 2013, alongside feature films helmed by other directors such as The Backwoods in 2006, Savage Grace featuring Julianne Moore from 2007, Devil in 2010, and 2014's Hercules by Brett Ratnor.
Velázquez subsequently explored supernatural themes through his music for the 2015 fantasy-horror Crimson Peak under Guillermo del Toro's direction. Subsequent notable works comprised Pride & Prejudice & Zombies in 2016 along with the dark fantasy A Monster Calls, again under Bayona's guidance, which premiered in Spain during late 2016 and reached the U.S. the following year.
