Hailing from Oxford, England, the four-piece Goldrush crafts a hazy, ethereal brand of roots rock that merges Neil Young’s West Coast country and folk-rock with the shoegaze aesthetic pioneered by Ride in the 1990s. Built around siblings Robin Bennett, who handles lead vocals and guitar, and Graham Bennett, who contributes keyboards, the group came together in the late ’90s and soon secured a deal with Virgin Records. Their first full-length effort, Don’t Bring Me Down, arrived in 2002, yet the label parted ways with them the following year. They recovered by issuing the self-produced EP Ozona in 2004 and expanding it into a complete album the next year. During that period the band also collaborated with a key influence, Ride’s Mark Gardener, on his solo release These Beautiful Ghosts and joined him on the road to promote it. The Heart Is the Place followed in 2007.
