Gonga, the Bristol, England outfit, launched their self-titled debut in 2004 with the goal of breathing new life into stoner rock as the new millennium advanced. The group featured vocalist Joe Volk, who incidentally resembled Kurt Cobain, guitarist George Elgie, bassist William Smalley, and drummer Thomas Elgie. Attention first arrived from Portishead producer Geoff Barrow, who placed them on his Invada label in 2003. The album appeared the year after and later reached American listeners through Tee Pee Records.
