Biography
Ray Kennedy supplied lead vocals for New York quintet Group Therapy, whose lineup also included guitarist Art Del Gudico, organist Jerry Guida, and drummers Tommy Burns and Michael Lamont. Contemporary chart material dominated the group’s first LP, among them the tracks ‘Hey Joe’, ‘Morning Dew’ and ‘Come See About Me’. Still largely unknown when they backed Moby Grape for a short 1968 British itinerary, Group Therapy won over crowds through a high-energy, soul-infused live show. Capitalizing on that exposure, the label eventually released the album under the revised title You’re In Need Of...Group Therapy; although a single version of ‘River Deep - Mountain High’ attracted some notice, the record never captured the force of the band’s stage performances. Group Therapy disbanded before fulfilling its promise, yet Kennedy went on to build a career as a vocalist and composer.
