Operating out of San Francisco, progressive house artist Spencer Brown, also known as Spencer Bruno, creates productions and performs live as a DJ. Early encouragement arrived from Avicii along with Above & Beyond, leading to his debut EP appearing on the former’s label in 2014 and his first full-length album surfacing on the latter’s Anjunabeats imprint four years later. His DJ performances stand out for their improvisational character, mixing well-known selections with obscure and previously unheard material, and he has appeared at prominent festivals while leading his own club tours across multiple continents. After issuing his second album, Stream of Consciousness, in 2020, he launched the independent label diviine two years afterward.

Brown began playing drums in early childhood and went on to master guitar, piano, bass, and additional instruments through self-directed practice. His first DJ appearance occurred during fifth grade, after which he became a frequent choice for middle-school birthday events. While finishing high school he forwarded an original track to Avicii’s manager and received a reply; following further refinement of his style over the next couple of years, he made his concert debut alongside Avicii at the Hollywood Bowl in 2013. Le7els Records, the label run by Avicii, issued Brown’s initial release that same year under the Spencer Brown name—the Chalice/Double Down EP. Alongside several remixes for artists such as Cazzette and HNNY, his early catalog featured the independent single pair “Jaboom”/“Mirek” and the 2015 track “Lockout.” He earned a degree from Duke University in 2016 after completing a major in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The Chalice EP eventually drew the interest of Above & Beyond, who placed Brown on their Anjunabeats roster; the label subsequently put out the Downpour EP, Embarcadero EP, and Vernal EP, each arriving in 2017. His debut album, Illusion of Perfection, followed on Anjunabeats in 2018 and included the Alpha 9 collaboration “No Going Back.” To promote the record he undertook his first headlining tour, routing through North America, Europe, and Australia. Joint projects with Raito, Qrion, and Ilan Bluestone emerged in 2019, preceding the January 2020 arrival of the solo album Stream of Consciousness. Initially presented as one continuous mix, the project later appeared as a series of separate unmixed EPs. In 2021 Brown released the EPs I Was Too Young for 90s Raves on Factory 93 Records and Silver Linings on Sasha’s Last Night on Earth, plus the Anjunadeep single pairing “Blue Magic”/“Rainy April.” He inaugurated the diviine label in 2022 with the double-sided singles “Forbidden Flow”/“18 Min Loop” and “Stuck”/“Reflex.”
