Guildo Horn stands out as a German singer and entertainer whose performances feature eccentric antics, an exaggerated look, and schlager numbers laced with irony, positioning him roughly as the local counterpart to Weird Al Yankovic. His most visible moment of recognition arrived when he placed seventh at the 1998 Eurovision Song Contest performing the track “Guildo Hat Euch Lieb!” Born Horst Köhler on February 15, 1963, in Trier, he entered the schlager scene at twenty-nine after securing an entertainer position at Cologne’s Luxor venue. There he captured his debut album, Rückkehr Nach Mendocino (1992), as a live recording.

In 1994 he first appeared on ZDF-Hitparade, the well-known music competition broadcast by Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen from Mainz, and finished third, showcasing his talent for such contests through his distinctive presentation. With visibility established, he began touring alongside the five-piece backing ensemble Guildo Horn & die Orthopädischen Strümpfe. Electrola, an EMI subsidiary, soon signed him, releasing Sternstunden der Zärtlichkeit in November 1995. The set contained humorous send-ups such as “Ich Find’ Schlager Toll,” which reworked Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock N’ Roll,” and “Ich Mag Steffi Graf,” modeled on the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love”; both tracks emerged as singles, the former reaching the Top 100, alongside newly written material.

His follow-up effort, Danke! (1997), climbed to number three and remained on the album chart for an impressive thirty-five weeks, paving the way for the Eurovision entry “Guildo Hat Euch Lieb!,” which itself became a number-four hit. Commercial fortunes subsequently declined. Schön! (1999) managed only a sixty-four peak, while its lead single “Berlin” stalled at eighty-two. Der König der Möwen (2002) barely entered the Top 100 at ninety-nine and produced no notable singles. His tenure with the major label concluded via the eighteen-track retrospective Essential (1995). By then Horn had already redirected his energies toward stage work, taking roles in the musicals Kiss Me, Kate (2005) and Paradise of Pain (2006). He occasionally revisited his earlier ironic persona, notably with the 2005 CD Die Rocky Horny Weihnachtsshow, which blended his established satirical style with his newer theatrical direction.
