Born on July 2, 1963, in Abilene, Texas, and raised in Hobbs, New Mexico, where his father served as pastor at Temple Baptist Church, gospel singer Guy Penrod grew up immersed in the traditions of Southern ministry. He completed Hobbs High School in 1981 after already producing and performing every vocal part on his own self-recorded album. Following graduation from Liberty University, Penrod established himself as a sought-after studio session vocalist, supplying background harmonies for Carman, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Garth Brooks, and additional artists while also singing with the Christ Church Choir.

An encounter with Bill Gaither during one of those sessions led to Penrod’s recruitment into the Bill Gaither Vocal Band. His expansive range and commanding delivery quickly earned him a wide following through the ensemble’s worldwide Homecoming concerts, and he contributed prominently to nearly a dozen projects issued under the group’s name.

In 2009 Penrod stepped away to pursue an independent path, issuing his first solo recording, Breathe Deep, on Gaither’s label while remaining affiliated with the organization. Brent Rowan produced the set, which blended straightforward country textures with Christian and spiritual themes—a direction Penrod continued to refine. The 2012 release Hymns preceded the simultaneous 2014 arrivals of Worship and the seasonal collection Christmas. A strong stage presence prompted the live document Live: Hymns & Worship, and in 2017 Penrod revisited signature material on the studio album Classics.
