Heavy Bones emerged as a fleeting hard rock outfit in the opening years of the 1990s, its lifespan curtailed once metal’s commercial standing began to erode. Vocalist Joel Ellis and guitarist Gary Hoey—who had studied at Berklee—launched the group in 1990 and completed the roster by adding drummer Frankie Banali, already known for his prominent role in Quiet Riot, along with bassist Rex Tennyson. After securing a deal with Reprise, the four-piece issued its self-titled debut album in 1991, yet the prevailing change in musical tastes rendered the band’s hair-metal sound, rooted in 1980s conventions, outdated almost immediately. A measure of notice arrived via the song “Turn It On,” though the exposure proved insufficient to sustain momentum. Hoey later pursued a solo path, continuing to collaborate with Banali, and earned radio airplay for several instrumental pieces that showcased his technical command.
