Biography
Although Hyper Go-Go never earned a reputation for bold originality, the UK house duo ranked among the scene’s most reliably successful acts, a status underscored when their initial releases ‘High’ (number 30, August 1992) and ‘Never Let Go’ (number 45, July 1993) both entered the national charts. James Diplock and Alex Ball had been collaborating since leaving school together in the mid-80s, operating from a self-built studio housed inside a converted warehouse on an abandoned airfield deep in rural Essex. Originally issued on Hooj Choons, ‘High’ later transferred to Deconstruction Records, while the storming piano-house track ‘Never Let Go’ moved the pair to a longer-term arrangement with Positiva Records. In February 1994 their follow-up ‘Raise’ climbed to UK number 36 by centering on the well-known ‘Raise Your Hands’ vocal hook and featuring guest vocals from Brian Chambers. Additional vocal contributions came from Sally Anne Marsh of Hysterix and from Adeva on April 1996’s ‘Do Watcha Do’. Diplock and Ball also constituted half of the techno project Electroset, whose ‘How Does It Feel?’ served as their designated ‘rave thing,’ and of the experimental electronic group Compufonic, which debuted on Ocean Records with ‘Ecstacy 0376’ in 1992 before joining Mute Records and releasing the Make It Move EP.
