German vocalist Ina Deter maintained an extended recording presence that ran from the mid-1970s well into the new millennium. Her commercial high point arrived in 1983, when the album Neue Männer Braucht das Land (1982) and its title song both stood prominently on the German charts; at that juncture she played a full 180 dates on the accompanying Männer-Tour. Momentum remained relatively firm for another two years, yet her studio activity diminished sharply after she slipped from the charts toward the end of the decade. Subsequent releases appeared only sporadically, each accompanied by a modest tour, but none restored the sales or visibility she had enjoyed at her mid-1980s peak. A loyal following that spans generations continues to value the catalog she assembled.

Deter entered the world on January 14, 1947, in Berlin. After training as a graphic designer she took her first position in 1966 at an advertising agency. In 1969, then twenty-two, she relocated from Berlin to Cologne. Her initial composition, “Ich Habe Abgetrieben,” dates from 1974, and her first chart entry, “Wenn Du So Bist Wie Dein Lachen,” followed two years later. The solo debut Ich Sollte Eigentlich ein Junge Werden appeared in 1977. From that point she issued albums at a steady pace, among them Heute (1978), Wenn Wir Unsern Neid Besiegen... (1979), Aller Anfang Sind Wir (1980), Neue Männer Braucht das Land (1982), Mit Leidenschaft (1984), Frauen Kommen Langsam -- Aber Gewaltig (1986), Das Live-Album (1987), Ich Will die Hälfte der Welt (1987), and Soll Mich Lieben Wer Will (1990); several of these were credited to the Ina Deter Band. Neue Männer Braucht das Land proved the strongest seller, yielding the hit title track in 1983, while Mit Leidenschaft and Frauen Kommen Langsam -- Aber Gewaltig also performed solidly on the charts. Concert demand remained high throughout the period, a fact documented by Das Live-Album.

The 1991 retrospective Ich Bereue Nichts gathered material recorded between 1980 and 1990 and effectively closed her hit-making chapter. A later collection of rarities, Hits und Flops, surfaced in 1998. New studio albums thereafter arrived at longer intervals: Ver-Rückte Zeiten (1993), Mit Früher Ist Heute Vorbei (1997), and Spieglein, Spieglein (2000), each supported by limited touring. A notable change of direction came with the 2003 release Voilà: Lieder von Edith Piaf auf Deutsch, a set of German-language interpretations of the French chanson singer that revitalized Deter’s creative drive and delighted longtime listeners eager for fresh recordings and live appearances.
