J*DaVeY

Vocalist Jack Davey, also known as Brianna Cartwright, and producer Brook D'Leau form the duo J*Davey, which blends elements of soul, funk, hip-hop, and new wave. They established the project in Los Angeles in 1999, after D'Leau had developed production techniques through hands-on experimentation with his father's studio equipment. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Davey had earlier belonged to an MCA-signed group that ultimately released no material. Billing themselves as the "black Eurythmics," the pair spent several years on the live circuit, where they developed a distinctive following and reputation while also creating music for the television series CSI: New York and Entourage.

Their recorded appearances and outside collaborations increased noticeably during the mid-2000s. A version of Frank Zappa's "Dirty Love" surfaced on the 2006 Ubiquity label compilation Rewind! 5. Early the next year they entered a Warner Bros. agreement that produced no output and dissolved rapidly. Later in 2007 the independently released The Beauty in Distortion/The Land of the Lost appeared. The duo found greater success through self-released material, including the EPs Boudoir Synema (2009) and Evil Christian Cop (2011) as well as the album New Designer Drug (also 2011). Further EPs followed in the mid-2010s with Rookie (2014) and POMP (2015). Across their partnership, both together and individually, they have performed and recorded alongside artists such as Sa-Ra, Thundercat, the Roots, 4hero, Miguel, and Mariah Carey.
