Biography
From a tender age, Pop-R&B vocalist Jawan Harris lent his voice to hymns inside his Chicago, Illinois congregation. Although gospel performers first sparked his interest, the sounds of Michael Jackson, Usher, and Chris Brown soon captured his attention, prompting him to refine both his vocal delivery and dance moves before posting video clips on YouTube. His manager later secured an introduction to Mark Pitts at Jive, the same label that housed Usher and Brown, and Harris joined the roster just before his twelfth birthday. The sleek debut single “Another Planet,” which carried a guest turn from Brown, registered on Billboard’s Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart in October 2010 yet never crossed into the main R&B/Hip-Hop ranking. By contrast, the follow-up “Keisha,” a track featuring Tyga and better matched to the singer’s years, reached that primary chart the following August.
