He also holds training as an anthropologist and has conducted detailed academic research into Middle Eastern music and instruments. His oud teacher was the renowned composer and oud master Hamza el Din. Stott commands skill on guitar, bass, percussion, and keyboards alike. He first gained recognition in the late 1990s as a producer and member of Stellamara, then joined Lumin during the opening years of the twenty-first century. Intermittent involvement with both projects has continued since. Between 2007 and 2011 he served as the resident DJ for “Hookadome,” an event tied to the annual Burning Man Festival. His solo debut arrived on Six Degrees in 2007 via the EP Souk Sonik; the full-length Saracen, steeped in Arab-music textures and beats, followed in 2008.
