Belgium’s Johan Gielen fuses taut house rhythms with faint echoes of spiritual and ecological trance. Having begun spinning records in his teens and advancing from neighborhood discos to prominent clubs, he achieved his initial breakthrough in 1995 when Tokyo’s Velfarre offered him a weekly residency in Japan. Although the travel raised concerns, he accepted and kept returning to Belgium between engagements to focus on original productions and remixes. Those efforts—Airscape’s “Pacific Melody,” Alice Deejay’s “The Lonely One,” and reworkings for Chicane, Vengaboys, Scooter, DJ Tiesto, and Boy George—displayed an open-armed Ibizan warmth that resonated with the growing late-night energy of crowds in Holland and Wales. The year 2000 marked his strongest period yet: while playing festivals across Germany, South Africa, and Norway, he deepened his partnership with Sven Maes (Svenson & Gielen, Blue Bamboo, Body Heat), issued the mix albums Academy of Trance and Trance Match, and established Johan Gielen Music Productions. Tiesto’s Black Hole Recordings sustained the momentum by issuing Gielen’s In Trance We Trust 004 in 2001, which moved more than 60,000 copies across European markets.
