Born in 2003 and raised in Bothell, Washington, within the greater Seattle area, Johnny Huynh developed an early command of piano alongside his brothers through formal lessons and school talent shows. He later embraced a self-described “band geek” identity, delivering assured performances as both pianist and guitarist across classical recitals and jazz ensembles. After setting music aside to pursue a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Washington, Huynh returned to songwriting following a breakup, sharing intimate vocal-and-guitar R&B tracks on Instagram and additional platforms. He frequently captured these performances in empty parking garages after dark, allowing his clear voice—edged with subtle grit at the upper register—to echo dramatically against the concrete. A 2022 cover of d4vd’s “Romantic Homicide” quickly amassed millions of streams, prompting him to issue original material. The self-released singles “The One That Was Meant for Me” (2023) and “Cheater” (2024) followed and met with comparable enthusiasm. Columbia Records subsequently signed him while he completed both his degree and a demanding SpaceX internship. Between spring and fall 2024 the label issued an EP sequence that included “GOOD AS YOU,” “LEFT OF ME,” and “MISS YOU TONIGHT.” Late that year Huynh added a notably concise interpretation of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” distinguished by its plaintive, stacked vocal harmonies—a fresh contrast to earlier versions, among them Jeff Buckley’s influential 1994 recording.
