Biography
Renowned for his performances on the Native American flute, Robert Mirabal has built a distinguished trajectory that unites ancestral and contemporary elements across multiple recordings and collaborative ensembles. In 2005 he issued a self-titled release under the assumed identity of the fictional Johnny Whitehorse. The Whitehorse projects depart from the new age and fusion approaches Mirabal had previously pursued, directing greater attention instead to Western sonorities and longstanding traditional components, although both artistic identities continue to integrate historic and current influences. Under the Whitehorse moniker Mirabal received a 2008 Grammy for Totemic Flute Chants and soon afterward earned a further nomination for the 2010 album Riders of the Healing Road.
