Biography
Jonas Bering, a Frenchman, crafts minimal productions frequently colored by dub textures, placing him nearer to Berlin outfits like Chain Reaction and Basic Channel than to Cologne’s Kompakt, even though he regularly appears on the latter imprint that favors a colder tech-house sound. His refusal to restrict himself to one approach evidently appeals to the label’s leadership.
Breakthrough arrived for the producer in 2000. Kompakt issued his debut album Bienfait, and the 12-inch Emballages also surfaced on the Cologne label before the year closed. Logarhythm then released From the Nape of the Neck, while Bering appeared at Montreal’s Mutek Festival alongside Kompakt associates Dettinger, Closer Musik, and Tobias Thomas. Marine, another Kompakt 12-inch, followed in 2002.
The second album Sketches for the Next Season reached the label in 2003 and moved toward stronger melody with reduced dub elements compared with earlier material. Later singles surfaced on Defrag Sound Processing and Sentrall Records, yet Kompakt brought out the EPs Behind This Silence and Lost Paradise in 2006. Seattle-based Kupei Musika issued the split EP Cityscape with Kate Simko the next year, and Kompakt delivered Can’t Stop Loving You in 2008. Its yearning, catchy title track, sung by Aubelia Petit, became Bering’s most pop-oriented piece to that point. Greek imprint Klik Records compiled selections from his singles and EPs into the CD collection Behind the Silence, also released in 2008.
Apart from scattered remixes and contributions to Kompakt’s Total series, Bering remained largely inactive for several years until resurfacing in 2014 with the album Regain on Japanese label Fountain Music. He returned to Kompakt in 2015 through a remix of “The Magical Party,” the debut single by the Silent Ones.
