Julia Wolf applies an unconventional lens to R&B and pop, shifting without warning from rumbling 808-driven rhythms to polished, guitar-driven synth-pop arrangements. Her tracks “Gothic Babe Tendencies” and “Hot Killer” illustrate this wide-ranging approach. The singer-songwriter’s first EP, Girls in Purgatory, surfaced in 2021, followed by her initial full-length release, Good Thing We Stayed, in early 2023.

New York-born and raised by Italian parents, Wolf directed her attention toward music early, beginning classical piano studies at seven and composing original pieces before enrolling at the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. After leaving the classical sphere behind, she concentrated on writing and producing independent material. When an audience proved elusive for her distinctive brand of indie pop, and a relocation to Italy with her family loomed as a possibility, she connected with fellow New Yorker Jackson Foote of Loote. Their immediate rapport, aided by Foote’s industry ties, led the pair to begin co-writing and recording. Their initial joint efforts emerged in 2019 with “Captions” and “Chlorine,” placing Wolf’s smooth vocals atop expansive, anthemic pop frameworks. Additional singles arrived in 2020—“Ghost” and “Pillow” among them—propelling her music into viral circulation and allowing her singular fusion of R&B and pop to attract a dedicated following. The 2021 EP Girls in Purgatory featured the widely streamed cut “In My Way,” and a steady sequence of releases continued through 2022 ahead of the arrival of her debut album, Good Thing We Stayed, in early 2023.
