Although Julian Ovenden first reached a wide audience through his appearances in the period drama Downton Abbey, his deep-rooted musical training ultimately steered him toward formal studies in musical theater and a thriving screen career. Born in Sheffield, England, as one of three children to the Reverend Canon John Ovenden, a one-time chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II, he began performing as a youngster in the St. Paul's Cathedral Choir. A music scholarship later took him to Eton College, after which he secured a choral scholarship to study music at New College, Oxford. Armed with prior credits on both Broadway and the West End, Ovenden issued his first album, If You Stay, on Decca in 2013. The orchestral collection revisited golden-age standards, among them "The Last Waltz" and "It Hurts to Say Goodbye," earning a favorable response from easy-listening listeners.

That same year he joined the John Wilson Orchestra for a Rodgers & Hammerstein program, terrain already familiar from his stage work. His growing television profile on Downton Abbey also placed him on the two-disc holiday set Christmas at Downton Abbey, where he applied his operatic background to traditional carols; released by Warner Bros., the project achieved double-platinum status. Following a late-2015 contract with East West Records, Ovenden delivered his sophomore album, Be My Love, in 2016. The recording paid tribute to the composers and lyricists of the Great American Songbook, offering fresh readings of works by Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, and the celebrated teams of Rodgers & Hammerstein and Rodgers & Hart.
