Biography
German producer Justus Köhncke channels his wide-ranging appetite for avant-garde, pop, and dance music through his own productions, achieving modest chart traction as one third of Whirlpool Productions on the homeland hit “From Disco to Disco,” interpreting songs by Janis Ian and Marvin Hamlisch, and issuing material via the Kompakt label. His first solo album, the covers-only Spiralen der Erinnerung (Spirals of Memory), appeared in 1999. After aligning with Kompakt two years later, he issued the singles Jet and 2 After 99 across 2001–2002, preceding his second LP, Was Ist Musik?. Safe & Sound, his third album, arrived in 2008 and preceded five years of EPs and 12”s on labels such as Nang and Blitz Club. In 2013 he teamed with Hot Chip member Alexis Taylor for the project Fainting by Numbers and returned to Kompakt with his fourth album, Justus Köhncke & the Wonderful Frequency Band.
