Biography
Philippe Katerine, who performs under the streamlined name Katerine, stands as a French purveyor of alternative songcraft whose initial underground recognition arrived during the mid-1990s before wider commercial traction followed as his profile expanded. He entered the world as Philippe Blanchard on December 8, 1968, in Chantonnay, Vendée, and launched his first proper commercial release in 1991 via the Rosebud imprint with the album Les Mariages Chinois. That effort, captured at home in a lo-fi manner and built from minimalist pieces lasting one or two minutes each, exerted considerable influence and resurfaced in expanded form with added tracks in 1993 under the title Les Mariages Chinois et la Relecture. The string of follow-ups L'Éducation Anglaise (1994), Mes Mauvaises Fréquentations (1996), Les Créatures (1997), and L'Homme à Trois Mains (1999) cemented his standing as a central figure within French indie pop. A series of joint ventures further elevated his stature, above all the complete album he composed for Anna Karina, titled Historie d'Amour (2000). Around the millennium his audience had swelled enough for regular appearances on the French albums chart, commencing with 8ème Ciel (2002). The decisive commercial ascent occurred in 2005 through Robots Après Tout, which climbed into the Top 30 on the French albums chart and yielded the Top 40 single “Louxor J'adore.” Bolstered by the traction of “Louxor J'adore” together with the subsequent release “100% V.I.P.,” Robots Après Tout remained on the French albums chart for nearly two years, accumulating 97 weeks altogether. Following that breakthrough, Studiolive (2007) appeared in multiple editions; essentially a studio-captured live reinterpretation of Robots Après Tout, one version incorporated an extended DVD. The 2010 self-titled album arrived alongside a video for every track, each helmed by his associate, the artist and bassist Gaëtan Chestnut, merging Katerine’s own visual concepts with Chestnut’s footage. In 2011 he initiated a triple-album endeavor alongside a jazz ensemble assembled by saxophonist François Ripoche. That project, 52 Reprises dans l'Espace, presented 52 reinterpretations of material by figures including Pierre Bachelet and Phenomenal Club. Beyond his recorded work, Katerine cultivated a parallel reputation as a capable actor once the century turned, taking roles across numerous films. He issued Magnum in 2014.
