Born on July 18, 1969, in Thionville, France, the singer, songwriter, and performer known as La Grande Sophie earned her stage name from her striking physical presence. She assembled her first group while still in her early teens. Although she relocated to Marseilles to pursue additional education, music soon drew her back, leading her to settle in Paris in 1995 with the aim of advancing her professional prospects. Promoter and producer Jean-Lous Foulquier noticed her talents in 1996 and featured one of her pieces on the compilation Le Son de Paris. The following year she issued her debut album, La Grande Sophie S'Agrandit, through an independent label. A major breakthrough arrived in 2000 when she secured a contract with Sony and commenced work on her sophomore effort. That recording, Le Porte-Bonheur, appeared in 2001 and achieved moderate commercial results. Between projects she maintained an active schedule of live dates, regularly performing at summer festivals across France. October 2003 brought her third album, Et Si C'était Moi, after which she spent the next two years primarily on the road. In 2005 she returned with La Suite, an album shaped by 1970s folk-rock textures; a deluxe version containing extra tracks and a DVD followed in 2006. Three years later she delivered Des Vagues et des Ruisseaux, whose single “Quelqu’un D’autre” edged her nearer the French Top 10, a threshold she finally crossed with the 2012 release La Place du Fantôme.
