Allan Mustafa joined forces with Hugo Chegwin, drawing input from Steve Stamp and Asim Chaudry, to launch Kurupt FM, an invented U.K. garage crew and pirate radio outfit that sits at the core of the BBC sitcom/mockumentary People Just Do Nothing. The series premiered in 2012, ultimately spanning five seasons, and the ensemble reached cinemas with the 2021 feature People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan.

Mustafa and Chegwin, both raised in Brentford, West London—the locale chosen as headquarters for their satirical collective—pointed to The Office, Ali G, and This Is Spinal Tap as key influences behind the creation of a hapless yet self-assured posse of MCs and DJs whose comedic shortcomings in skill and insight drive the humor. Five short webisodes surfaced online in 2011, prompting BBC Three executives to greenlight a 2012 pilot that led to the first full series in 2014. Mustafa embodies crew leader MC Grindah, Chegwin portrays DJ Beats, Stamp plays Steves, Chaudry takes the role of Chabuddy G, and Daniel Woolford appears as Decoy.

The collective issued its debut proper single, “Heart Monitor Riddim,” in 2016. The following year, timed with series four, the mix album Kurupt FM Present The Lost Tape arrived in November and spotlighted several original Kurupt FM tracks—“It’s a Kuruption Ting,” “Suttin Like That,” and “Get Out the Way”—while centering mainly on the group’s MCing over grime and U.K. garage cuts by Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, and Wookie. Also in 2017, after scattered live shows, Kurupt FM performed at Glastonbury Festival. Series five in 2018 included a music video for “Heart Monitor Riddim” and appeared to conclude the program, yet the crew resurfaced in 2021 with the theatrical release People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan and their first collection of original material, Greatest Hits, Vol. 1, which was introduced by the Craig David collaboration “Summertime.”
