Born into a celebrated lineage of Mexican performers, Leonardo Aguilar has earned Grammy nominations for his work as a banda and norteño singer and guitarist. He is the offspring of music icon Pepe Aguilar and Aneliz Álvarez-Alcala, as well as the grandson of legendary Mexican singer-actors Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre, a clan the national press has dubbed "La Dinastía Aguilar."

Holding dual Mexican and American citizenship thanks to Pepe's birth in San Antonio, Texas, the younger Aguilar began joining his father on the road during childhood, alongside his sibling, singer Ángela Aguilar. At twelve years old he and Ángela issued Nueva Tradición, an album that allotted four tracks to each of them. One year afterward the pair, joined by their youngest sister Majo Aguilar, delivered the single "Lo Busqué," whose video has since accumulated more than 40 million views.

December 2016 saw the release of Aguilar's debut solo effort, Gallo Fino, which his father produced. Additional collaborations have linked him to such noted figures as Espinoza Paz and El Chapo de Sinaloa. That same album received a nomination for Best Norteño Album at the 18th Annual Latin Grammy Awards in 2017, while the track "Compromiso Descartado" earned its own nod in the Best Regional Mexican Song category.
