From an early age, Lil J stood out for his knack with rhymes as well as his fierce drive to advance. At seven he could be found spitting verses outside the neighborhood K-Mart, passing a tip jar to raise cash for his first demo recording. He carried that same focus into his early teens, still honing rhymes while pushing his way toward a place in rap. Attention arrived in 1999, when the fourteen-year-old caught the ear of Trans Continental Records, the imprint tied to the era’s biggest teen-pop acts including the Backstreet Boys, O-Town, and LFO. His talent registered quickly, and he soon signed a deal with Hollywood Records. Late 2001 brought his major-label debut, the sleek All About J, which drew on leading producers from every coast—Jermaine Dupri, L.E.S., and L.T. Hutton among the most notable. Refusing to settle, he took the project on the road and began looking toward Hollywood.
