Crafting adventurous dream pop in the vein of Blonde Redhead and Au Revoir Simone, Lilies on Mars originated as the creative vehicle for Sardinians Lisa Masia and Marina Cristofalo. Longtime friends and multi-instrumentalists, the pair relocated to London during the 2000s with the goal of advancing their music careers. Work alongside Franco Battiato across multiple film and music endeavors, together with the mounting of a tribute production honoring David Lynch, prompted the duo to launch the project; their self-titled debut album appeared in 2008. While continuing to perform both with Battiato and independently, Masia and Cristofalo added former Sunny Day Sets Fire drummer Matthew Parker to the lineup, and this configuration tracked the follow-up Wish You Were a Pony during 2010. That same year the band prevailed in a remix contest staged by Christian Fennesz, delivering a new version of his previously unreleased track “The Seventh String.” Following the album’s 2011 release, Lilies on Mars appeared at the 2012 South by Southwest festival. Valentina Magaletti joined as drummer ahead of the sessions for Dot to Dot, an album issued in Italy in 2013 that included the single “Oceanic Landscape,” another collaboration with Battiato; the record reached wider international audiences in 2014.
