American singer Lisa Keith first built her reputation through session work as a backing vocalist, frequently appearing on projects overseen by the production team Jam & Lewis. When the pair handled several cuts for Herb Alpert’s 1987 album Keep Your Eye on Me, a commercial rebound for the trumpeter, they naturally brought Keith into the studio. Her contributions proved especially prominent on the project’s two major pop successes: “Diamonds,” where she supported Janet Jackson, and “Making Love in the Rain,” which she fronted. These high-profile appearances led Jam & Lewis to offer her a contract on their Perspective Records imprint. Although the 1993 single “Better Than You” reached the lower reaches of the Top 40 by early fall, her debut album Walkin’ in the Sun failed to register commercially, as did subsequent releases, returning Keith to her established role as a sought-after background singer.
