Biography
Living Hour crafts a broad, subtly psychedelic form of dream pop marked by melodies full of longing, fleeting layered rhythms, and sounds drawn from multiple vocalists along with the Organelle and brass, beyond the standard keys, guitars, and percussion. The band's initial long-player came out in 2015 under the title Living Hour. Production on the 2019 follow-up Softer Faces involved Jarvis Taveniere and Kurt Feldman, and Melina Duterte of Jay Som contributed to the making of 2022's Someday Is Today.
The group originated in Winnipeg, Canada, and put out their earliest basement tracks in September 2013. These featured a rendition of the White Stripes song "In the Cold, Cold Night" plus the band's own composition "There Is No Substance Between." Already displaying a hazy, deliberate approach, they issued their debut studio effort as the single "Steady Glazed Eyes" in the first months of 2014. This helped solidify the main trio consisting of Samantha Sarty handling lead vocals and keyboards, Adam Soloway on guitar and vocals, and Gil Carroll also on guitar and vocals. Their self-titled first album appeared the next year, initially in a restricted cassette edition via Tree Machine Records based in Bloomington, Indiana during April 2015, and subsequently through Lefse Records from Portland for broader distribution in February 2016.
When preparing the sophomore record, Living Hour had grown to include Brett Ticzon on bass and vocals plus Alex Chochinov contributing drums, organelle, and trumpet alongside the original members. Softer Faces, issued by Kanine Records in February 2019, was produced by Kurt Feldman, known from the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Jarvis Taveniere of Woods. After Chochinov exited, the band operated as a quartet and brought in Jason Tait, associated with Broken Social Scene and the Weakerthans, to play drums on the subsequent album. Ticzon took on additional instruments in this phase, while the central trio traded off lead vocal duties. Produced variously by Melina Duterte of Jay Som, Jonathan Schenke who has worked with Parquet Courts and Pottery, and Samur Khouja linked to Cate Le Bon and Gruff Rhys, the album Someday Is Today emerged on Kanine in September 2022.
