Originating in Petaluma, California, Love Equals Death channels rock shaped by classic rock alongside horror-punk, with the group marking its formation on Halloween 2003. Shortly after assembling, the four-piece lineup of vocalist Chon Travis, bassist Dominic Davi (ex-Tsunami Bomb), guitarist Rosser, and drummer Tonio Garcia-Romero cut the four-song EP 4 Notes on a Dying Scale for Popsmear and began building recognition throughout the Bay Area. Duffs later stepped in for Rosser on guitar, prompting additional touring. The band’s next effort, The Prelude, surfaced exclusively in Japan during July 2005 and combined demos with material from the prior EP. The Hucklebuck EP followed in the United States the next month. After their live performances caught Fat Mike’s attention, Love Equals Death joined Fat Wreck Chords. The label’s first release from the group, the Bill Stevenson-produced Nightmerica, arrived in March 2006 on both CD and vinyl. The original configuration disbanded in 2009, yet a decade afterward Chon Travis introduced a reconstituted version of Love Equals Death. This lineup issued the studio album Gravity & Grace in 2022 and the B-sides-and-rarities compilation The Hour of Resurrection in 2021. Chon Travis passed away on August 11, 2024, during a United Kingdom tour.
