Biography
Machinegum originated when the Strokes' Fabrizio Moretti established the project as an artists' collective and band that weaves audience participation directly into its creative methods. The group's first full-length recording, the 2020 album Conduit, presented its atmospheric fusion of synth pop and indie music.
Moretti recruited a circle of friends and associates for the musical component, among them Nation of Language's Ian Devaney, drummer Chris Egan, keyboardist Martin Bonventre, visual artist/musician Erin Victoria Axtell, and Delicate Steve. The ensemble made its live debut with a December 2018 performance at the Brooklyn venue Baby's All Right. One year afterward, Machinegum issued its debut album Conduit—produced by Jake Aron and Andrew Maury—to streaming platforms without fanfare. That January the collective mounted an art exhibit/performance at the New York gallery Fig 19 that featured audience participation and a silent disco setup. Following its signing to Frenchkiss Records, Machinegum issued Conduit more broadly in May 2020.
