British DJ and producer Mark Knight has long stood as a defining figure in soulful house, whether through his own studio work, his performances behind the decks, or Toolroom Records, the influential imprint that earned a lasting reputation for high-caliber, soul-infused house.

Knight’s passion for music surfaced early, with soul occupying the center of his listening habits, yet it was only in his late teens that the soulful house sound championed by Paul “Trouble” Anderson, Tony Humphries, and Bobby & Steve drew him in completely. By 2001 he had begun producing original material and working as a DJ, issuing tracks across multiple independent labels. Within the following two years, dissatisfaction with how those releases were managed prompted him, together with his brother and father, to launch Toolroom Records in 2004. The label took its name from the toolshed that housed his studio and quickly began putting out both Knight’s own music and material from Rozalla, ATFC, and Allister Whitehead. As his standing in the scene strengthened, demand grew for his distinctive blend of soul and funk-infused house, opening DJ opportunities throughout Europe and the U.K. While maintaining his schedule of performances and running the label, Knight kept issuing his productions on Toolroom, maintaining a consistent flow of quality house music until the arrival of his first album, 2016’s A Year in the Life. That record revisited 2015, gathering his output into a single, unified mix that ranged from chugging Detroit-inspired house to funk-laden beats. Over time Toolroom expanded, taking on the role of developing fresh talent, staging events internationally, and releasing numerous compilations and mixes. When COVID-19 arrived in 2020, Knight used the period to focus on his second album, 2021’s Untold Business, which returned to the sounds that had first captivated him as a teenager. He brought in Robert Owens, Beverley Knight, and Damon Trueitt to shape a collection that merged soulful garage, house, and ’80s-influenced soul. His output continued without pause into 2022, including a collaboration with Armand Van Helden on the T.J.M.-sampling single “The Music Began to Play.”
