The German rapper Marteria, born Marten Laciny on December 4, 1982 in Rostock, East Germany, conceived Marsimoto as an entertaining side project. Experimentation with an effect device yielded a high-pitched vocal style akin to that of Quasimoto, the alter ego of American rapper Madlib, thereby bringing this pothead persona to life. Marsimoto's inaugural album surfaced in 2006 via Magnum 12, preceding Marteria's official debut, Base Ventura, by one year in 2007. Released through Four Music in 2008, the second Marsimoto album Zu Zweit Allein achieved a peak of number 84 on the German charts. Marsimoto resurfaced in 2012 with Grüner Samt after Marteria's 2010 release Zum Glück in die Zukunft. Production credits for Grüner Samt went to Dead Rabbit, the Krauts, Kid Simius, and additional contributors, propelling the album to a number three chart entry.
