Lance Butters, a German battle rapper who keeps his identity hidden, appears in public behind a gold mask modeled on the Marvel superhero Iron Man. His rhymes come across as confrontational, boastful, and brutal, yet he delivers them at a measured, relaxed pace with crisp pronunciation. References to narcotics recur throughout his work, and he is regularly captured on camera inhaling from a blunt. After several years of anticipation fueled by a string of EPs issued between 2011 and 2013, the stark debut album Blaow narrowly missed the summit of the German chart in 2015; three years afterward he resurfaced with the even more somber ANGST.

Born in Ulm in 1988, Butters first took up rapping around 2006 and entered the online tournament VBT in 2010. That same year he began distributing free tracks and posting clips to YouTube, only to step away from the battle circuit the next year in hopes of reaching a broader audience. In 2011 he established Frank Castle Cooking Gang alongside producer Bennett On and rapper coru, issuing the online EP cooking sum. His self-released 2012 project Selfish earned favorable notices, leading to a 2013 deal with Four Music, the imprint launched by Die Fantastischen Vier. Futureshit, his initial EP for the label, achieved modest sales. Although he had signaled that the forthcoming full-length would shift toward a more pop-oriented sound, Blaow remained faithful to his established approach and reached number two on the German album chart in 2015. Following the interim 2016 release Die Welle, he finished ANGST, a comparatively darker and more introspective album that appeared in 2018.
