Hailing from Texas and emerging out of underground circles to reach mainstream chart success, rapper, vocalist, and songwriter Matt Champion first gained wide recognition through his role in the hip-hop collective Brockhampton. After the band completed eight studio albums and subsequently dissolved, he launched his solo career with the 2024 full-length Mika's Laundry.

Born Matthew Garrett Champion and brought up in The Woodlands, Texas, he connected with the individuals who would later form Brockhampton during his high-school years. Beyond the eight projects issued with the group between 2017 and 2022—including Iridescence, which topped the U.S. charts in 2018—he contributed to earlier and later releases such as Kevin Abstract’s MTV1987 (2014), Young Lungs’ Contradiction (2016), and the Blossom’s 97 Blossom (2021). Once Brockhampton parted ways in 2022, Champion turned his attention to independent work. The initial preview came in 2024 with “Aphid,” a duet featuring Dijon. He followed that with the introspective “Slug” and then the widely noticed “Slow Motion,” a joint effort with BlackPink’s Jennie. All three songs appear on Mika's Laundry, an album he produced alongside Dijon and Henry Kwapis that also incorporates contributions from former Brockhampton associates Romil and Bearface.
