Biography
Born in Quebec, Canada, Matt Holubowski pairs his frequently elaborate acoustic guitar work with personal narratives and reflective themes as a vocalist, composer, and string player. The 2016 follow-up Solitudes broadened the scope of his prior recordings by favoring ensemble settings across most tracks.
Raised in Hudson within Montreal’s suburbs, he composes primarily in English yet also crafts and sings material in French. Issued on Audiogram Records in 2014, his first effort Ogen, Old Man presented spare singer/songwriter pieces that featured only modest input from additional musicians, among them producer and mixer Connor Seidel. Despite containing just a single French-language track, the record helped him secure a loyal following across French-speaking Canada after he placed fourth on La Voix, the Québecois adaptation of the international singing competition. His next full-length, again on Audiogram, appeared in 2016 under the title Solitudes—an explicit nod to Hugh MacLennan’s novel exploring the longstanding rift between Canada’s English- and French-speaking populations—and adopted richer band arrangements throughout. After devoting eighteen months to touring in support, including a hundred performances within Quebec where his audiences consistently surpassed those elsewhere in the country, he issued the related EP Epilogue near the end of 2017. The following May he supported Ben Folds on a United Kingdom run before returning home for multiple festival dates.
