The Meligrove Band emerged in Ontario during 1997 when high-school friends Jason Nunes on vocals, guitar and piano, Michael Small on bass, Rick Gomes on drums and Darcy Rego on guitar came together. Their sound occupied territory between the power pop of fellow Canadians Sloan and the piano-driven rock of Ben Folds. Ductape Records issued the group’s debut, Stars & Guitars, in 2000; two years later the erratic Let It Grow appeared. Later in 2002, after Gomes departed, Rego moved to drums and the band expanded to a quartet with the arrival of Andrew Scott—distinct from the Sloan drummer of the same name—who had previously played in Femme Fatale. The remaining Femme Fatale members, Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler, went on to form Death from Above 1979. In 2005 the Meligrove Band became the first Canadian act to secure a worldwide deal with V2. Their third album, Planets Conspire, reached Canadian stores in January 2006. Scott exited the following year and Brian O’Reilly took his place, appearing on the band’s fourth album, Shimmering Lights, released in 2010.
