Born into a musical household, pop singer and songwriter Michelle Lewis came into the world as the daughter of saxophonist Morty Lewis and his spouse, a seasoned session vocalist. She herself entered the performing arena early, voicing spots for commercials and securing recurring roles on the children’s series Sesame Street. After completing a psychology degree at Columbia University, Lewis secured—through her uncle’s assistance—a position as production coordinator at the GRP jazz imprint. That role placed her amid the New York jam-band circuit responsible for launching the Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler, and she soon began crafting dance-pop material for Camille, the Todd Terry Project, Eternal, Deni Hines, and Amy Grant. An urge to explore more autobiographical themes prompted her to develop songs for her first album, Little Leviathan, which appeared in 1998 under the guidance of producer Steve Fisk, whose credits include work with Geraldine Fibbers, Joan Osborne, Beat Happening, and Screaming Trees.
