Bryce Cloghesy, the Canadian singer, songwriter, and producer, channels his creativity through Military Genius, a solo outlet that carries the experimental post-punk tendencies of his other bands into markedly stranger terrain. The project's debut full-length, Deep Web, appeared in 2020 and mapped out an eerie, solitary sphere of shadowy and restrained psychedelia, while its 2024 successor Scarred for Life shifted toward a more overtly rock-driven sound without losing its fractured character.

Based in Vancouver, Cloghesy belonged to the post-punk band N0V3L as well as Crack Cloud and Blanka across the 2010s. Military Genius first surfaced in 2016 with the three-song EP Brave World. During the following four years, Cloghesy continued to record and perform with his various groups yet steadily assembled fresh material under the Military Genius name. The project's aesthetic remained far quieter and more abstract than the dance-oriented punk outfits, reflecting the influence of Arthur Russell and Suicide along with occasional playful jazz inflections. Early 2020 brought the release of Deep Web, an eight-track collection of fragmented, remote, and exploratory compositions.

For the follow-up, Cloghesy withdrew to the Mojave Desert, working in near-total isolation and committing most of the sessions to cassette. The resulting songs proved intensely personal and purging, occupying sonic territory distant from the first album and favoring drifting acid jazz textures and ambient structures closer to Talk Talk than to the Suicide references of Deep Web. Scarred for Life reached the public in October 2024.
